On to Machine Shop Special Projects - Sub-scale Muzzleloading Artillery

The first step is to locate the front edge of the narrow band and remove the excess material greater than the diameter of the tapered chase at this point.  Once that material is gone, we have a reference point for the narrow band and can start working on the front side of the wide band and the transition band.

Now move out to the diameter for the first step and take the edge over for the large band.  Back into the air at the left, feed in to the proper diameter for the second step and cut over to the proper width for that.  The space between the narrow and transition bands is only .605" and it is tapered; so let's rough it down to the maximum diameter first and locate both edges.  Then set to the diameter for the smallest band and feed to its proper width, then feed out at 45º until clear of the material.   Now change tools and set the compound rest at 2.33º.  Come back to the left side of the taper and feed in to the proper diameter and start feeding with the compound rest feed to cut the taper.  Cut until the angled side of the lathe bit gets close to the band edge at the right, then switch bits and finish the taper.   Move back to the narrow band and cut the steps on each side.

Next we will swap the barrel end for end and work on removing the excess material and turning the tapered chase course.

Here is what our project looks like at this point.
