On to Machine Shop Special Projects - Sub-scale Muzzleloading Artillery
First we have to rough out a stub for the cascable. This means removing another 4 1/2 lbs of steel to form a cylinder 1.4" in diameter and 1.46" long. Now that we have some working space, we can start with the various bands. The wide band is just a rough outline of the curved breech face that will be made later.
Now that all of the rear facing bands have been roughed out, we will change tools and do the forward facing bands.
Next we will switch back to the rear face and make the curved surface from the wide rough band we left there. This can be done free hand or by calculating the various diameter and length combinations that form the exact surface. This one was done by calculation; it took 39 separate cuts to form the curve which will be smoothed with a file when finished.
Another view, this time from above.
Next we will work on the first course and the next set of bands.
